《Tree Hug

Tree Hug is a site-specific performance that took place beside a major roadside in Taipei’s East District. In this work, the artist used her body as a medium to embrace a tree—one slated for removal—and invited passersby to participate in a shared, one-minute hugging action.

Amid the unceasing traffic and the noise of the city, this intimate gesture became a moment of reconnection—between human and nature, between emotion and memory. The artist pressed her breath, skin, and heartbeat against the tree, allowing her body to become an extension of its form, creating a space for non-verbal exchange and deep listening.

Participants responded with unexpected emotion. Some felt calm, others were moved to tears. One person said, “When my skin touched the rough bark, my breath followed its rhythm. The noise disappeared. All that remained was stillness and nature.” Another shared, “I didn’t know why I was emotional. Maybe the tree was saying goodbye.”

Tree Hug is more than performance art—it is an ecological ritual and a form of embodied resistance. It calls attention to the often-overlooked lives of urban trees and offers a moment to slow down, to feel, and to remember our relationship with the natural world. The tree is not just scenery—it is breath, memory, and presence.

By hugging a tree, we are not only touching bark, but also touching ourselves—and sensing the future we long to create with our surroundings.
