Origin Is Not a Place — Transplanted Ecologies uses transplantation as both a material process and a conceptual method. It explores how humans and plants rebuild relationships, knowledge, and sensory connections after being removed from their original landscapes and networks. Here, “origin” is no longer understood as a fixed geographical location, but as a condition continually formed through rupture, migration, translation, and reconstruction.

The work begins with the Amis system of wild vegetables, approaching it as relational knowledge interwoven with ecological landscapes, embodied perception, spiritual understanding, and healing practices. The artist transplants wild plants into an indoor environment regulated by artificial light and water. Together with performance, video, and objects left through audience participation, they form a temporary and continually changing ecological field.

These plants are not merely artistic materials. They carry memories of relationships formed through the artist’s learning, gathering, planting, and participation within Amis traditional territories. Removed from their original environments, the plants retain traces of previous landscapes while responding to the controlled conditions of the exhibition space. Their unstable states reveal transplantation as an ongoing process of adaptation and redefinition.

The work asks: When a wild vegetable is transplanted indoors, can it still be considered wild? When land-based knowledge is removed from its original network of relationships, can it continue to exist in another form?

These questions also reflect the human condition. When people leave their places of origin and enter different cities, cultures, and institutions, how are their relationships with land, identity, and perception redefined?
